Intervento di Brett Shapiro (Scrittore, giornalista)

Brett Shapiro, writer and consultant for the United Nations, is a gay father.
He adopted his son, Zachary, as a single parent when Zachary was three days old. Mr Shapiro will discuss the legal and administrative dimensions of adopting a child as a gay parent, as well as the various social and psychological challenges that he and he now 18-year-old son (and several years later, Brett's companion and his companion's son) have faced as a visibly "non-traditional" family.

Brett Shapiro is an American writer and journalist. He was raised in Philadelphia and then spent 12 years living in New York, Paris and Jerusalem before moving to Rome in 1991 with his son, whom he adopted as a single parent when his son was three days old. He is the author of the best-selling L'Intruso, a memoir published in Italy (Feltrinelli) and subsequently a film and theatrical production. He collaborated with the conductor Robert Craft on a biography of Igor Stravinsky entitled Dearest Bubushkin, published in the UK (Thames and Hudson) and has also written two children's books, The Adventures of Bailey the Bag Dog, winner of Austria's National Book Award, and Bailey Strikes It Rich. His short stories have been published and performed in theatres in Rome, and his essays and articles have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers in Italy and the US. Since moving to Rome, he is also a consultant with the United Nations and a regular guest professor at the Università di Siena.
